El Tercer Reporte del Panel de Expertos del National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) sobre la Detección, Evaluación, y Tratamiento del Colesterol Sanguíneo Elevado en Adultos (ATP III – Adult Treatment Panel III) publicada en el año 2001 determina la nueva clasificación de niveles séricos deseables para la población adulta, la que se detalla a continuación:
